In the face of escalating climate change and environmental degradation, sustainable solutions are no longer optional—they are essential. Pillar III of the Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen (OKM) Foundation focuses on equipping youth and communities in the ASAL and Kerio Valley regions with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to protect the environment while building resilient livelihoods. This pillar bridges conservation and economic empowerment, ensuring that environmental stewardship goes hand-in-hand with poverty alleviation and local development.

We believe young people are key drivers of environmental change. Through hands-on programs in tree planting, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture, we engage youth as active participants in climate action. Our initiatives promote eco-friendly farming techniques and raise environmental awareness, cultivating a culture of stewardship. Training in waste management, recycling, and land use further empowers youth to take ownership of their environment and become ambassadors for sustainability in their communities.

We promote green jobs that protect the planet and provide income. By introducing renewable energy technologies such as solar power, we reduce reliance on harmful, unsustainable energy sources. In parallel, we support the growth of eco-tourism as a viable livelihood—developing community-based tourism initiatives that create employment, conserve natural resources, and celebrate local culture and biodiversity. These efforts open up new economic pathways that align with long-term environmental goals.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of livelihoods in the ASAL regions—but it must adapt. We train youth in climate-smart farming techniques, value addition, agroforestry, and sustainable land use to boost productivity while conserving the environment. These practices not only increase food security but also enhance resilience against climate shocks such as droughts and erratic rainfall. By investing in agricultural entrepreneurship, we empower youth to innovate and lead in building a food-secure, environmentally conscious future.

We empower youth and marginalized communities through education, skills development, leadership, peacebuilding and sustainable livelihoods.
